MRC, MGTC Team Up To Drive Net Zero Transition In Rubber Industry

The Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) have formalised a three-year partnership to accelerate low-carbon initiatives in Malaysia’s rubber sector. The agreement was signed today at the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2025.

The collaboration, witnessed by Datuk Dr Ching Thoo A/L Kim, Secretary General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), aims to support the industry’s transition towards net-zero operations between 2026 and 2028.

Muhammad Eizaaz bin Muhammad Redzuan, Chief Executive Officer of MRC, said the partnership builds on the Low Carbon Transition Roadmap for Malaysian Rubber and Rubber Product Manufacturers, which provides a framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting sustainable business practices.

Under the MoU, MRC and MGTC will implement structured greenhouse gas management capacity building programmes, develop an industry-specific emissions tracking and calculation tool and undertake sectoral benchmarking to assess readiness towards net-zero operations. These initiatives are intended to equip rubber product manufacturers with the tools to measure, manage and reduce emissions effectively.

To date, more than 50 MRC member companies have taken part in GHG management initiatives, demonstrating growing momentum within the industry to embrace sustainable transformation.

The partnership aligns with Malaysia’s National Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Agricommodity Policy 2021-2030, supporting the country’s target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and strengthen the rubber industry’s position as a global leader in sustainable production.
